"keitai" in Japanese means "portable" - and does not have the
meaning of a telephone at all in Japanese!
kei = carry in your hand
tai = belt
rice cookers, bicycle air pumps etc can all be keitai-cookers
and keitai-pumps...
People today often say "keitai" instead of "ketai-denwa":
den= electricity
wa = talk
:)
