"keitai" in Japanese means "portable" - and does not have the
meaning of a telephone at all in Japanese!

kei = carry in your hand
tai = belt

rice cookers, bicycle air pumps etc can all be keitai-cookers
and keitai-pumps...

People today often say "keitai" instead of "ketai-denwa":

den= electricity
wa = talk

:)
