Do i-appli handsets/emulators support double buffering, where individual
drawing operations are written to an off-screen memory buffer and then
everything is drawn at once? I have an application that uses g.lock() and
g.unlock(true) during paints, but flickering is still noticeable in the DoJa
and i-JADE emulator.

As far as graphics go, which devices (if any) support double-buffering? Do
the emulators?

GIF can do graphics and photographs very well. It can even do animation.
JPEG gets better compression on photographs but it is much more complex and
with 8-bit paletted screens it is even more complex. However, it seems clear
that photographs and better compression is in demand, so JPEG will probably
get some hardware assist in the future (if not already).
