You're right that the first offerings won't be great, but actually you
can extrapolate:

a. battery consumption.. I doubt the first KDDI phones have a long
battery life to play sound. Actually the iPod battery has about the same
capacity of a mobile phone. And you could design a phone that you switch
to the "mp3 player mode" where it disables all power-consuming parts....
and more important, disable the antenna, so you could use it in an
airplane ;)

b. interface.. not yet, but why isn't it possible to stick an interface
as cool as iTune to a mobile phone?

c. regarding DRM, upload, download.. there is no reason why mobile
phones won't be able to be as nice as others in future. .. 

So.. for short term.. I agree. For long-term, it all depends on a good
design, integration and the business model decisions ;)
