(1) what's the essence dividing candybar and clamshell?
one observation is that in mobile phone and PDA designs, about half
of the surface is wasted, that the display and keypad have to be on
one side.
imagine a candybar with a large LCD on one side and the keypad on
the other. I think that'll be likely satisfy John's (not Kerry's)
requirements to receive calls at one key press and read messages.
then flip extend the keypad to the same side as the LCD for browsing
and messaging, and there you get a clamshell reversed.
(2) compromise for excellence
clamshell can be seen as a compromise between candybars and PDAs,
while it's nearer to candybar to carry along easily.
for candybar lovers, there is something clamshell can do for you
like a small screen and several keys on the surface, that you don't
have to flip it open to receive/reject a call or to watch time.
that's the mainstream design now (w/ branches like SO505i & V801SA).
