What do you mean by "fieldwork"?  You can get in touch with some Japanese 
people who can speak English by placing a free classified ad under

That's a real magazine, not just a web site.  There are probably other web 
sites or mailing lists that you could use, but I don't know them offhand.

My wife had no email before her previous keitai, 4 years ago.  We probably
wouldn't have started dating without it, because my Japanese phone
speaking skills were not too hot then.  She upgraded to a camera phone
last year, after I did.  Some of her older friends still have really old
phones (e.g., monochrome), while her younger friends have camera phones.  
It's amazing how fast they can input email on the keypad.  Besides email
and talking, she uses her keitai to get weather forecasts and train
routes.
