Stacking images is an option although Mika's dynamic images from the server
are probably more efficient. Some phones place a border identifier around
images with links (NM502i?) that you will need to take into consideration if
using stacked images.

So table support varies per phone. Figures. What about simply
placing image blocks one right after the other? If you have three
bitmaps [A] [B] and [C], some WAP devices will display them
on the same line:
[A][B][C]
and others will break them:
[A]
[B]
[C]
If most i-mode handsets do it the first way, one could make
interfaces (thinking games mostly) out of tiled image sets.
also, thanks to all who replied.
