It can be already - depending on your calling habits. An annual
mobile phone subscription (to Cellnet in the UK) costs me less than
fixed-line rental (£40 vs at least £72) and includes lots of time
for off-peak calls. Peak-time calls are a lot more expensive than
from a fixed line, but in peak time I can use the phone at work...
