Actually, this is another good point. AU doesn't just refer to Internet
access. "EZweb" is the internet services brand. Remember, IDO offered
EZaccess services, and DDI offered EZweb services. This has been merged to
be EZweb for all of it. This is the internet services brand.

AU is the corporate brand, and it isn't just for CDMAOne phones. The new G
series phones (PDC) are also being branded under AU.

See? Too many brands!

I may be getting off base here, but I think it's like Docomo a few years
ago. The carrier brand was "Docomo", even though the company name was some
long Japanese name (they've only just switched to the Docomo name for their
company name). This is what AU is for KDDI. Of course there was and is no
brand for PDC, because basically, who cares? But the branding of the CDMA
technology was to emphasise it being new and to differentiate it from the
old Japanese standard (I'm guessing).
