Just because i-mode is trademarked does not mean that a competitor could not
build an i-mode compatible browser. They are all based on the Mosaic
browser.
I dont believe that Japan has a business method patent system either, so
everything could be duplicated short of the name "i-mode", as long as its
developed "independently"(without reverse engineering the browser). Think of
IBM - Compaq, Netscape - Microsoft.
If a competitor wants to effectively compete with i-mode they must embrace
it, and build on top of cHTML. JPhone has come close, but for some reason is
not 100% compatible (graphics, cgi method).
Do you think that the i-mode contents menu is the reason people go to
i-mode, are the content providers signed into exclusivity contracts?
