Using the built-in browser, Google detects that I have an N71 and
tries to send me a customized version, which the phone barfs on.
However, if you use the Nokia browser (which is either included or
downloadable from Nokia's website), it will detect the phone simply as
"Symbian S60" and send you a Java version which runs fine. I use both
Gmail and Google Maps on my phone.
Be aware though, they don't work over the Web connection, only Access
Internet, which doesn't qualify for most of the packet flat-rate
plans. Downloading each app will cost you about 350 yen. The data
costs for the Gmail app are nearly negligable, but Google Maps will
eat up packets really fast. Access Internet packets are typically
0.21yen/packet (again depending on your plan), so be careful.
