Gerhard,

forgot to say: a key reason for the success of i-mode in Japan
and for the failure of WAP in the GSM markets is the speed of
response. If you live in Japan, you will know that i-mode
response time is typically 3-7 seconds for official menu sites,
while I heard that WAP response times in Europe for the old-type
dial up connections was in the 30-60 second range. (as an example,
on FOMA the official i-mode menu in FLASH format with the
seasonal animation loads typically in about 5-6 seconds).

To achieve this very fast response time - typically faster than
fixed line internet - its necessary that all components work well
together, which in Japan is orchestrated by DoCoMo.
