i-mode mail is unique in that it's neither SMS nor e-mail (have a
look at i-shot), though it does use the e-mail address format, so
that it could compete with J-Phone.
J-Phone began to give its users an e-mail address when DoCoMo was
about to start the development of i-mode in late 1997.
the result is easy interworking, widely available to GSM and IS-41
network operators, too. an important factor is not technology:
in Japan, anyone can send a message from Internet for free.
