A good developer is always the best tool. :-) Really, it's going to be the
same stuff you use for regular java programs. Borland has OptimizeIt, but it's
really expensive. Here's a good link with general optimizing tips:

You can google for profilers or optimizers + java performance, if you haven't
already.
