Yes. DoCoMo uses this for customers to pay the mobile phone bill
at convenience stores. The convenience store has a 2D bar code reader
which reads a numeric code from your phone, which has your billing
information and linked up with DoCoMo's server prints out you bill.
We documented this with pictures in our imode report, which you
can find on our website.
Cmode is another (probably far less successful) example:
you produce a 2D barcode ticked on your phone, the Cmode
machine reads it and gives you a coke bottle or can.
There are many more examples. If you need these barcode readers
in Japan, you can buy them for your own applications.
