I tried using the V801SH with a USIM from a Swedish operator, no luck.
On the other hand the same card with a European UMTS phone worked fine
with the Vodafone Japan network. I don't think you can buy a Vodafone
phone without contract here in Japan.

All three operators try their best to make it impossible to use their
phones outside Japan, even for offline demonstration usage. Wonder
why.
