Perhaps the same people who bought cell-phones even though you can use a
payphone on any street corner?

In Britain we call them 'mobile phones', not 'cell phones', incidentally...
It's an important distinciton, and perhaps not unrelated to the way that the
FCC structured the US cellular market with no apparent awareness that people
might want to (see if you can grasp this concept) MOVE AROUND while making
calls ;)

The hype for paid wi-fi is. Who's gonna pay for wi-fi when you can walk
thru any neighborhood or cafe or some macudo's and get online? They've gone
from talking about hotspots to hot zones. Most of Seattle and SF are said
to be covered with publicly supported wifi.

The real question is who's gonna pay for phone network service when one can
chat away on a wi-fi internet phone for free (or almost free) in a cafe?
