hi John,
(1) looking for the Essenes
regarding clamshell, I think the question is more "when and how".
once in Japan, the foreign manufacturers were puzzled why Japanese
don't like mobile phones. when DoCoMo was spun off in 1991, those
NTT guys moved to the new company were thought in disgrace.
there were analysis like the Japanese tradition demand face to face
meetings, and a man talking though a mobile is not considered as
reputable and dependable, etc. we learned later that the problem
was regulation.
(2) long live planed economy?
the relationship between DoCoMo and Japanese manufacturers is a
difficult story. there are many problems at the downside, while I
think one of the good things is the time-to-market, that you don't
have to wait for WAP or Java standards or follow vendor schedules
- you define them (stronger than "push them").
the way Vodafone is pursuing is more focused on the volume, smart
buying, and group planning. I see a danger in this if not handled
carefully, because it's hard to provide a one-fit-all solution.
I value flexibility and focus on the local market more than the scale
and planed economy, which may cost you dear (like Fins' neighbor).
cheers,
Ken
