(1) what's in a name?
in 1980 Minoru Arakawa (another name to search), the then president
of NOA, ordered new ROM to replaced old ones in coin-op machines.
the Donkey Kong "Ossan" was chosen because face with big mustache
was suited for display with limited pixels. "Mr. Videogame" was
the name in proposals written by Miyamoto.
the name Mario was decided in 1983 by NOA for the American market.
it's very likely they had "marionation" in mind.
(2) controlled environment
as we know, the Atari VCS market collapsed in 1982 just before
Nintendo famicom released the next year. the disaster was because
customers were disappointed by too many cheap low quality products
in a over competed market. Nintendo concluded that open and free
competition was not for anyone's good.
16 years later, DoCoMo behaved like Nintendo and succeeded. i-mode
is a closed system and DoCoMo also takes tight control of content
development to ensure high quality service.
what's next? ... who will be the PlayStation?
