there are some Japanese companies developing Wi-Fi phones, too.
the handsets have the problem of short standby time, kind of bulk
compared with PHS, but otherwise impressive.
Wi-Fi, a great technology though, cannot provide the coverage
needed for "aways-available" voice and notification devices,
the reason PHS failed in front of cellphones.
Wi-Fi + TU-KA may be an interesting idea.
for wide-area service, cdma2000 or TD-SCDMA are good competitive
technologies if we prefer a single solution for both voice & data.
