Curt,

You forget that until six months ago at least two of the features you list,
megapixel cameras and memory cards, were rarities even in the Japan market.
These are all easily added, especially when you have a potential customer
(Vodafone) saying that it would love to buy 10 million handsets from you if
only you'd increase the display resolution.

I'm not saying such features are not important but look at the success of
Au's Infobar. That's got no QVGA and a 300,000 pixel camera but is selling
well from what I hear.

It's big selling point is design. If there's one truth about Japanese
handsets its that they all, well almost all, look virtually the same.

Motorola has been rolling out some good looking phones, mostly in South
Korea and other Asian markets, and there are some nice handsets from
Samsung, Sony Ericsson (non-Japan) and Siemens so perhaps the entry of
foreign players will stir up the market a bit, especially for people for
whom design is important.

Regards,

Martyn

From the article:

The company had a bitter experience in losing subscribers after
it reduced the number of the types of the handsets used for its
service. Learning a lesson from the experience, it will prepare a
wide variety of mobile phones for its third-generation (3G) service
    by introducing foreign-made handsets.

Ha, good luck! I don't think that bringing in foreign handsets that
don't even begin to compare to the Japanese ones is going to do any
good. How many of them will have QVGA, megapixel cameras, memory
cards, Java, and other cool features. Certainly the above (with the
exception of Java for the lower-end models) are now pretty much a
minimum requirement for a new phone these days, I think.
