The Series numbers are roughly technical divisions and seem to be
intended more for the benefit of developers than of consumers.
They don't seem to be known to the general public.

The model numbers provide other information. The first digit seems to
have something to do with market segment:

3: mass market
5: people who don't want to spend much
6: ???
7: gadget freaks
8: style-conscious people with too much money
9: mobile professionals who are too wimpy to carry a laptop

(note tongue firmly in cheek).

The second and third digits show similarities and differences between
models within and across those segments. For example the 7650 and
3650 are technically similar but are aimed at different segments.
When a model is adapted for the US (different band or protocol) it
normally changes the third digit, e.g. 9210 to 9290.
