Re phones with built-in TV, on the face of it, it looks like a great idea
especially as radio tuners seem to be popular on phones. But there are some
things to think about..
1. We've had mini-TVs available for many years and sales penetration is very
very low in the UK (can't say for other countries. This suggests to me that
there isn't the consumer demand for it.
2. Consumers are very used to carrying their music around with them -
walkmans, portable radios, ipods etc are all very popular whether or not
they are linked to the phone. I would hazard a guess that the majority of UK
households have some kind of portable music system available to them. So the
demand was already there before radio tuners and phones were combined.
So my question is do consumers want it?
If they don't want it now, will they want it in the near future?
Or is this just technology for technology's sake?
And do the costs justify the potential demand?
And just out of plain curiosity...
How many on this list have a mini-TV and use it?
How many on this list use their PCs as a TV?
I'm not against new developments at all; I really *love* this industry and
what's happening in it. And I'm very excited about people developing new
applications and ways of doing things. However, I'm a pragmatist which means
in this case I don't see a short-term or medium-term demand or business
model. Maybe it's a longer term thing or maybe it's never going to happen?
Looking forward to being proved wrong!
Best wishes all
Helen
