hi Nik,
I think I told it before that I worked for DoCoMo on several projects
including the very first i-mode development back in 1998, one year
before most people ever heard of it.
it was more than obvious for us that UP had something far better than
what later became i-mode, and I know dozens of Japanese colleagues
who made i-mode a reality but rather prefer WAP like me. actually,
WAP was developed in parallel with C-HTML but was dropped later.
one reason DoCoMo selected the C-HTML I guess was that they didn't
expect i-mode would become so popular to bring down the network.
today, we should feel lucky that DoCoMo didn't choose WAP.
I won't say UP was perfect. actually UP didn't have much experience
in the wireless mobile world and made several wrong design decisions.
I concede C-HTML is easier than HDML. there is little difference
if you only develop simple sites like news and weather, but for
complex things like BBS and Web mail, you will have to do a lot
of modifications to generate HDML pages (at least at the beginning).
but this problem would have been easily solved if au/KDDI could have
do some developments and publish the codes free.
cheers,
Ken
