In the latest JSCL java doc that I downloaded from J-Phone there is a
BarCodeConnection interface that appears to do what you want i.e. get bytes from
the barcode reader. Unfortunately my Japanese reading ability is extremely limited
so my comprehension is pretty low but from what I can understand it looks pretty
straightforward.
