Erik,
it really depends what kind of data you need and what for.
You can get some of the pure traffic data for free from the carriers.
However, if you want to have thorough market analysis you'll find
that you need to pay for this, since it's enormous work to get
these data together with representative groups etc.
You'll find that the data you can get for free from the
carriers will never contain adult traffic for example.
When we work out the business strategies for overseas companies
building business in Japan, we sometimes need to get very detailed
traffic and sector specific ARPU and traffic data, and you can't
get these data for free.
Some of these data are actually very difficult to obtain or to
estimate, since many companies of course make efforts to keep
much of their data secret. In those cases there are only indirect
methods to estimate the data, such as asking representative groups.
However, the largest such representative groups only have a
couple of 1000 members, then you have to extrapolate from a
couple of 1000 to 60 million. You'll need to be sure that your
relatively small group is not biased in some way.
