"NTT DoCoMo to Invest in FOMA Handset Development"
TOKYO, JAPAN, April 23, 2003 --- NTT DoCoMo, Inc.
announced today that the company will invest in the
development of FOMA(R) 3G mobile phones being
manufactured by Sharp Corporation. The move is
part of a strategy to promote the rapid development
of FOMA phone technology and stimulate market
demand for FOMA services....
This official announcement tells us that handsets
are still a major issue for 3G both in Europe with
H3G and Japan with Ntt DoCoMo Foma.
I read recently in the news that Nec Ceo expects
3 more years to have 3G phones with battery
performance comparable to 2G phones.
Is also KDDI having the same problems with
CDMA2000 1x ?
Is this a first or is it normal for JP operators to invest
directly in the handset development?
