and something i forgot:
people don't buy the new KDDI handsets
because of rather abstract issues like 3G,
2000-1x, high bandwidth etc., they buy them
because those are "the new KDDI handsets"
with cool new features, like GPS.
people want the newest, the freshest, the
best, they want new flashy features and a
modern design.
what they don't want is chunky, clumsy
handsets with poor battery life and poor
coverage at a much higher price. it's as easy
as that.
the industry might be talking about music and
video downloads, but the reality is different:
90% of customer's needs are covered with
PDC services already (imode), and 9 of the
remaining 10% can be covered by the
bandwidth available with CDMA2000-1x.
The market segment that is willing to pay a
premium for even higher bandwidths is really
small.
