Mark, I meant the data services which are basically the old i-mode.
the only service that's better than au/KDDI is 64 kb/s video call.
for everything else, i-mode Web, mail, picture mail (the infamous
i-shot was originally designed for FOMA large messages >10KB), and
video mail, FOMA provides inferior service based on the inferior
i-mode system.

and Gerhard,

i-mode made history in 1999, and took off with two engines.
the first is text messaging, which is no rival of that of KDDI or
J-Phone other than the 500 byte size; and the second is ringtone,
which DoCoMo hadn't planned but was persuaded by the manufacturers
who had worked on J-Phone SkyMelody. Web access was less than
ringtone download, and far less than messaging.

the fashion was color LCD in 2000, which has little to do with
the network, where everyone worked hard to expand the old system
to accommodate the exploding traffic. but at the same time KDDI
and J-Phone upgraded their mail system to support large size and
attachment, which would make big difference later.

the mobile market, i-mode's success was well studied in 2000,
and that's the time DoCoMo started to loose steam. the first
Sha-Mail phone hit the street on November 1st, 2000, taking
advantage of the 6KB Long Mail, while both J-Phone and au/KDDI
were planning new services which are way better than DoCoMo's.

DoCoMo again "led the market" in 2001 to announce the world's
first Java phones. KDDI and J-Phone "joined late" but with much
better thought services. the DoJa2 came with 504i last spring is
no more than a mimic of J-Phone's first Java one year before.
some parts of i-shot center use the same technology as @Sha-Mail,
but in a wrong way (will be corrected). those new 504iS phones
are really not far from remakes of J-SH07 (avail June 2001).

think everyone know the new services one after another from
KDDI, J-Phone, and TU-KA recently, while DoCoMo is overloaded to
even understand the market and is in a defense position for
the last two years. but really the problems are from 1999-2000,
maybe even before that in 1997-1998.

DoCoMo is now upgrading its i-mode mail and i-shot center which
should have been done 3 years ago. still the systems won't be
as good as the rivals after upgrade next year.

Nokia, Ericsson, Openwave, and LogicaCMG, doesn't anyone have
a chance to help DoCoMo get rid of i-mode?

cheers,

Ken
