the 500-byte message limit is only for DoCoMo PDC, not Japan.
J-Phone PDC supports 6 KB or 12 KB mail depending on the handset.
the 6 KB "Long Mail" is now considered too short for high quality
photo and 40 polyphonic (Yamaha SMAF format) ringtone. it'll be
upgraded soon.
au/KDDI can do 100 KB. that's about 25 sec ezmovie and is large
enough for the chakugo'e (ring-voice), chaku'uta (ring-song), or
chaku-movie/anime.
FOMA's mail size is 10 KB (message + up to 10 attachments) now.
it will be expand to up to 100 KB, and maybe 300 KB in the future.
i-mode ringtone download allows up to 10 KB, same for FOMA except
P2101V which can do 20 KB.
I think delivery over HTTP is the way to go, like MMS (but except
i-shot which is a shite). on an HTTP server, it's easier to add
filters to handle different formats for different terminals.
as Paul said, sending the URL in a short message is a good idea,
if the handset can save the downloaded file.
although DoCoMo has 60% of the Japanese market, everyone else,
au/KDDI, J-Phone, and TU-KA, are doing much better than DoCoMo
in the last two years, with a better technology - WAP.
cheers,
Ken
