hi Andres, Gerhard, et al,
DoCoMo plans and drafts specs for mobile phones every year and
hands it down to the handset makers, same as NTT/DoCoMo do with
the all the equipment manufacturers.
I know nobody who has seen i-mode handset specs in whole, tens
of kilos of required functions/interfaces. nobody will try to
argue/negotiate with DoCoMo on these specs, because they won't
correct any error and because the same spec has already been
delivered to other manufacturers as well. you just study and
implement it, and ask DoCoMo to explain if you can't understand.
the elite DoCoMo guys can't understand even middle school maths,
and they lack the basic engineering training in Japanese univs,
but this system is very very powerful and is one of the reasons
behind the successful Japanese market -
as an operator, DoCoMo is nearer and more sensitive of market
than manufacturers like Ericsson, Nokia, or Motorola, and they
know what can be best supported by and make fully use of their
own network.
it's a means to compete for new and keep existing customers if
they like any operator unique features. as backfire, the over
heated competition adds pressure on everyone including au/KDDI,
J-Phone, TU-KA, and DoCoMo itself to offer new services to
the customers. this is not seen in Europe where the operators
has not much room to maneuver.
504 series phones are the sons of one father (one customer -
DoCoMo, one spec) and many mothers (fucked makers).
cheers,
Ken
