As some who was an active member of some WAP Forum drafting committees
(namely Push and WAE) and having left with disgust at the failed attitude of
the WAP drafters and the companies which sent them, I can only agree with
Curt.
The people who designed WAP designed it to fail, taking with them a lot of
VC capital and Entrepreneurial dreams.
DoCoMo (and KDDI, and JPhone) did the right thing (similar to Phone.com in
the US with HDML). Write the specs so EVERYTHING is compatible. The idi*ts
in the WAP forum Board of Directors didn't, and won't get it. So, writing
for WAP is inferior and incompatible and guess what, WAP 2.0 make absolutely
no inroads into making it easier or better to use WAP.

You go on about how great WAP is, but really, it's a pain in the ass.
Extra features such as the "card stack" thing are great if you've got
a teeny tiny display, but once you're able to deliver 5K pages, that
feature is usless; you're generally at a point where the web server
needs to process user input before it can figure out what the user needs
to see next.
The first thing I noticed when my last company started building i-mode
and WAP versions of the web site was how much easier and cheaper it was
to build the i-mode site. We could use our standard tools, a fairly
familar language, and didn't have to order a big expensive specification
and wait for it to arrive in the mail.
Even one of the creators of i-Mode said in an interview recently that he
believed one of the reasons it was successful was because it was much
easier to make content for. Having compared i-Mode and WAP development
personally, I can well believe this.

I don't understand how this would make any difference at all. If you
leave the phone on vibrate and ignore the incoming call it costs you
nothing anyway. (For that matter, it costs you nothing if you take the
call.) And if you turn on your phone after work, you still have to pay
the same to download the e-mail as you would if you had let it download
earlier.
