DoCoMo short-mail is not SMS
would not call a suicide bomber Patriot missile
- a short-mail is "attempted once and forgot forever"
no matter success or failure, will never retry
- the short-mail server doesn't have access to HLR to check
the handset info or receive alerts from HLR when a mobile
becomes available in the network.
* in short-mail, the center rings your number once and will
never call again if can't get through.
* an SMSC will dial again and again, following a pre-defined
schedule by the operator and depending on what kind of error
it gets from the network.
when you turn on the phone coming out of a cinema, the network
will tell the SMSC to send the messages to you which failed
when you watching the movie.
in J-Phone, all these will be tried over 72 hours until you get
the messages, very reliable service.
cheers,
Ken

Actually, the user interface varies by handset; my F503i has
separate buttons to send as e-mail or short message service.
