There have been a number of attempts at this -- barcode patterns
on keitai displays, and special scanners to read them -- used for
couponing.  A gaijin company even claimed a patent filing at
one point, though I only find mention of it in one place now:

Needing a special scanner makes this a hard sell, I think.
