Extensions of already existing popular applications are often very
useful/popular.

Examples are:

- POP3 mail notification i-appli for the i-mode remote mail service (you
get a notice when you have new mail on your PC mail account such as
Yahoo, hotmail etc.)

- i-appli reminder function for the "last train schedule service". You
search when the last train is running that gets you home from a party
etc and then set the appli to buzz you when you have to go to the
station

Other popular apps (for me, or in general)

- games, games, games. all kinds of games. I personally prefer
standalone games, since I don't create traffic by playing them and I can
use them at places where the network connection is off (subway etc.).

- i-appli alarm clocks that wake you up and show you the actual weather.
You can set the clock appli to wake you up earlier, if it rains etc.

- i-appli maps, where you can move on the map and zoom in/out
dynamically

A good source for i-appli and their popularity ranking is the gigaflops
i-appli site (Japanese only). Its on http://g-appli.net/.

You may also ask your question on the Japanese Gigahz lists. That should
give you a good response from Japanese users.
