Another difference between the i-mode menu and Curt's desktop Yahoo menu is
that official i-mode sites aren't allowed to have links venturing outside
the "garden" area, so if you're not in the habit of entering your own URLs
you'll never find your way outside by accident.

Is this true though? Do most official sites block J-Phone, or just
some? Certainly the DoCoMo main menu itself isn't accessible from
non-i-mode phones, but as for the sites themselves, I thought official
i-mode sites were just generally slicker than non-official sites, so it's
just more likely that they'd have bells and whistles like checking for
handset type. Also, official sites usually publicize their position on the
i-mode menu rather than their URL, so it makes them harder to find from a
J-Phone if you don't know where to look.
