    Hmmm, sorry about my last answer, it didn't cover the points exactly right.
One major difference is probably that in one format (SMAF-16 or MA-2) the tracks
are labeled 1234 and in SMAF-4 the sole track is labeled 0.  Why they switched from
 'M' 'T' 'R' 0x00 to 'M' 'T' 'R' 0x01 in the header is beyond me, but so it is.

    That was the biggest hurdle I had between different formats.  Since I haven't used
those Java classes, I can't help much more, but there are a lot of other possibilities
of what the differences are.  It could be something else.

    If I remember right the phrase player is limited to 4 voices rather than 4 tracks, but
I could be wrong.  But it should be able to play a background tune and a beep, but I remember
us having some sort of problem when we were experimenting with it.
