NTT DoCoMo is partnering Coca Cola and Itochu Corporation in trials of a new
wireless information and entertainment service centred on vending machines.
The new service, called Cmode, will enable mobile users to buy drinks from
Coca Cola vending machines using digital vouchers. In addition the hybrid
vending terminals will also provide printed and audio services such as local
information and directions and Coca Cola-branded entertainment services. For
each soft drink purchase mobile users will accumulate points which can be
exchanged for further Coca Cola products or entertainment services such as
ringtones, digital logos and games.
The three companies plan to carry out a three-month trial of the Cmode
service involving 25 vending machines located throughout Tokyo. NTT DoCoMo
and Coca Cola entered into a strategic agreement in March 2001 to explore
ways of incorporating mobile internet services with vending machines. To
date the three partners have invested Yen1.1 trillion in the Cmode venture.
