(this has been personally reviewed by the CEO of the Wapforum who
also discussed this issue with me per email).
Considering that the majority of today's wireless internet users are
imode users the decision you mention makes sense, see:

My personal opinion is that these things are best decided by the markets
not by committees.
In Japan there is direct competition between WAP-based EZweb and imode
and J-sky, and you can directly read off from the subscriber numbers
which system is preferred by the market.
