TOKYO, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Matsushita Communications Industrial Co Ltd
<6781.T> and NEC Corp <6701.T>, Japan's number one
and two producers of mobile phones, will cooperate in developing
software for mobile Internet-enabled handsets, a newspaper
said on Monday.
Electronics giant NEC confirmed that the talks with Matsushita
Communications. Matsushita was not available to comment.
Amid a slowing market for cell phone manufacturers and decreasing
profitability, the deal would mark the first major tie-up
between Japan's top two domestic mobile phone makers in the
development of 3G devices.
"We are still in talks with the other companies, so we cannot confirm
the details of the report," said a NEC spokeswoman.
Matsushita Communications is 56.3 percent owned by consumer
electronics giant Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd <6752.T>,
which will also participate in the tie-up, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun
newspaper said.
The three firms will join hands in developing video transmission
software for third-generation (3G) cell phones, while jointly
