Two further points, in addition to the greater range required of GSM
handsets:
* There're less chips in a PDC handset - much more of the intelligence is in
the network. So, the GESM standard produces bigger handsets with worse
battery life, all things being equal.
* (I've heard that) a lot of Japanese handsets use Lithium polymer
batteries. GSM handsets still all use Lithium ion.
