This table is very useful. Do you have a URL for the magazine itself? Also
am I correct to assume that these prices refer to contract handsets? If so
is it possible to buy phones on any network without contracts?

Here is a list from the latest issue of Nikkei Mobile magazine. It is in
Japanese, but it should be obviously enough once you know that the above
amount is Tokyo price and the one below is Osaka price. (*Tokyo = Kanto
area, Osaka = Kansai area*)

The list shows average shop prices in the beginning of July.

As you can see, when buying the latest phones, Kansai beats Kanto with
prices that are about 2~3 times as low!
