Hello,
I read this article in the Nikkei Electronics :
"at the Bluetooth Congress, held in June in Monte
Carlo, NTT DoCoMo Inc. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp.
reported progress on formulating a Bluetooth
specification for use in third-generation cellular
services in Japan. The proposed specification is the
Unrestricted Digital Information (UDI) profile, which
NTT DoCoMo and Mitsubishi have been working on jointly
with Intel Corp., Sharp Corp., Oki Electric Industry
Co., Ltd., Matsushita Communication Industrial Co.,
Ltd. and Nokia Corp. of Finland. The specification has
nearly reached the "Version 0.5" stage, when it will
be published for review by associates, according to
the two companies.
UDI is a specification for implementing the bearer
services defined in recommendation I.230 of the
Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the
International Telecommunications Union (ITU-T).
Normally, a terminal adapter is required to implement
video transfer applications, such as
videoconferencing, on a cell-phone handset. However,
if the cell phone is equipped with UDI, the TA
processing can be left to a peripheral device. The
cell phone requires no TA processing capability
itself, thereby simplifying the design requirements. In
their presentation to the Bluetooth Congress, NTT
DoCoMo and Mitsubishi said that evaluation trials of
UDI-enabled handsets are due to begin this December,
and that the formal UDI specification should be
finalized by June 2002"
I would like to understand; Could somebody explain
what is UDi to this non-engineer and tell me how it
relates to Bluetooth ??
Thanks
Chantal Spapens
