Hi Daniel and Michael,
Thank you for the information. I'm not saying the SMS services are better
than what is in Japan. What is interesting is that the success of ringing
tones and possibly screen savers says that the success of these services
(which played such an important role in getting i-mode off the ground) is
not culturally specific to Japan. As you know a lot of the media keeps
saying this about ringing tones, screen savers, horoscopes, and games. (by
the way docomo's recently released data says the entertainment contents
represent 72% of the accesses from its main menu. see the following page
http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/ir/index.html). The europeans should be able to
use the superiority of the mobile internet to provide better ringing tone,
screen saver and other entertainment services and thus get the ball rolling
in europe. there's nothing like a few happy (and paying) users to give the
service a good image.
it's interesting that nokia is the main provider of the necessary phones
and Nokia may have struck an exclusive license here. so perhaps we can pin
the whole blame on Nokia now. anybody from nokia want to comment?
