Well - this can be read the other way too... Aside from the the 5/8/10k
page limit, a major reason imode pages are short is because they take so
long to download... So given compression, page sizes could increase.
Certainly if one is sending a lot of long forms one has a lot of data in
not much screen real estate... If you are using caching, compression
presumably puts only marginal extra load on the server...
I can't remember the level of compression that gzip gives you, but if I
have 10k of content (decompressed) I would far rather get it as 5k
compressed - it's just CHEAPER. Compression is getting so easy at the
server end (just add a line to your php.ini or use mod_gzip - it can now
do dynamic content too I gather) that it is a real shame that phones don't
support it. But since docomo charges by the packet, I don't suppose they
have any incentive to reduce the number of the little things cavorting
across their network...
Regarding cpu power - presumably the 503 series has enough oomph for
transparent decompression... would the 502 series?
(I KNOW this is a silly question with an INDEFINITE array of nested "it
depends"... but how do the cpu's in the 503 series stack up against - say
- an intel P90? (for doing - I know - "it depends"...))
