I heard from visitors of DoCoMo's press release on Thursday that there were
more reasons for the delay, which I haven't seen in news anywhere.
Those reasons were issues regarding the standard, and the fact that DoCoMo
would have to upgrade a lot of the first system to adapt to new versions of
the standard.
It seems a bit far-fetched since most other 3G projects in Europe and at
other places uses the Release 99 standard. And they would probably not have
the newer Release 4 (yes, there is a naming confusion in 3gpp, after 99
comes 4...).
But still, the Release 99 version is not really up to a tenth of the hype
around 3G. But as it seems now, Release 4 could not be ready for use
already in October.
Has anyone seen anything more on this?
(You need to be a real geek to find some readable info on 3gpp's site on
standard versions. See www.3gpp.org)
