OK. but what about buying a phone, downloading a few representative
iAppli, and shipping it, with recharger, to the U.S.?  (Do all iAppli
check in with mothership DoCoMo before running?)

Laugh if you want, but in the U.S., sometimes people use FedEx
to send packages from one floor of an office tower to another.

Given the costs of doing business in Japan, and the jump you
could get on certain opportunities, overnighting phones across
the Pacific for final test-check cycles on iAppli might actually be a
sensible way to develop.

Of course, you still need someone on the ground here, if you
want to do it on a routine basis.

There are probably some "derived work" issues under international
copyright law.
