I proposed putting barcode scanners into mobile phones,
(which was almost certainly not a new idea at the time -
I tend to "invent" things about six months after someone
else's patent filing.) BarPoint seems to be mostly just
a way to look up products via UPC - at best, half the
formula.
barpoint.com could, of course, make use of a UPC number
entered by any such scanner. I think the real added
value would come with making it location-based - put in
a UPC (ideally by scanning, for convenience), get back
the nearest places you could buy the item, together
with prices at those venues. I.e., instant answers to
the question "Could I buy this cheaper somewhere
nearby?"
