It really depends on what you take into the standard. I rather would see
this
as handset OS capabilities. That is: how much does GIF have to do with HTML,
JavaScript
HTTP, SSL, etc.? It is sold in the same package (websites), but that's all.
So, what does displaying a GIF on a handset has to do with WML, WMLScript
(not
comparable to JavaScript), WSP&WTP, WTLS? The only thing is that the browser
supporting WAP should also support GIF for displaying, thus: the OS needs to
know
which MIME-type belongs to which object and the browser should know what to
do with it.
Really, I can understand your point, it's just a matter of putting what
where.
