This is a bit ironic. But the first standard for the web on mobile phones
became a W3C recommendation yesterday, a fairly nono-event as it seems. But
in reality, it's not.
I do not count WAP specs as a standard, that's why the recent W3C
recommendation for XHTML basic is the first standard for web content in
mobile phones.
See http://www.w3.org/2000/12/xhtml-basic-pressrelease.html.ja
One of the few rational reasons for establishing WAPForum was that W3c was
too slow in specifying something for mobile use, except for the note on cHTML.
But now, since WAPforum has said that they will follow W3c recommendations,
who needs WAPforum now? Wouldn't it be logical shut the crap down once and
for all? And why should anyone except some of the closest relatives be
interested in waiting for WAPforum to apply XHTML basic in WAP-NG this
summer, when it's already specified?
Beats me...
