The greater problem in Europe for WAP/iMode is the lack of GPRS handsets
operating at any type of acceptable speed. There are major delays in supply of
this equipment - even with poor screens and weak WAP browsers. It seems that
they will not be available in mass numbers until early 2002 across Europe. The
lack of a packet based system really kills it for the consumer or business.
The network operators in Europe are very conservative and have little
experience with developers - particularly on the content side. But email and
instant messaging over GPRS will be a "killer application" in Europe with GPRS
in 2002. RIM are already trialling such devices in London. Benefon have
linked with Microsoft for their Q handset which can browse HTML - this is a
nice handset - but is still some way behind your local products in Japan.
Will Microsoft be the people to bring a form of iMode to the West with their
MME HTML browser? Maybe they will once again give away the browser in
Europe/USA to create a HTML wireless internet world?
